All the elements necessary for building, were prefabricated and arrived at the site ready for installation. Since most of the walls of these buildings are glass, Zumthor created a system of boxed spaces within the house, the would act as support columns.
The walls are composed of 6” x 4” pine boards that are assembled, frame free, by tongue and groove.
Surroundings/Environment and Leis
The red pin in this photo is the site of the building. Leis, which is situated 1,526 m above sea level, is the highest settlement occupied all year round in the community of Vals. Today Leis has around 20 inhabitants. There is an inn, and two families tend the mountain meadows. The texture of the rich wooded mountains add to the effect the environment has on the houses, allowing for an almost surreal feeling of solidarity, independence, and alone-ness.
