Peter Zumthor

Peter Zumthor is an extremely influential Swiss architect and winner of the 2009 Pritzker Prize and 2013 RIBA Royal Gold Medal

Zumthor believes architecture is not about form and values: construction, sites, and materials.

"If you come to a building I think what surrounds the space in terms of material makes it's atmosphere not so much the form" - Zumthor

Zumthor was trained as a cabinetmaker at the shop of his father. This could explain the love for craftsmanship and materials that Zumthor speaks of so often in lectures and in his book "Thinking Architecture."

In addition to the Leis Houses, Zumthor also designed Therme Vals , a hotel/spa complex also in Vals, built over the only thermal springs in the Graubünden canton in Switzerland. It was for this design that he received the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize in the year 2009.
